Searches for a Dholera railway station have grown alongside the progress of Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). The short answer is that Dholera does not yet have its own passenger station. Travellers today rely on stations in nearby towns and in Ahmedabad, while two rail projects are set to change that over the next few years.
This guide explains where the nearest station is, how people reach Dholera by train today, and what the planned rail lines will add.
The Situation at a Glance
- No passenger Dholera railway station is operating inside the SIR as of October 2026.
- The closest working station is Dhandhuka, roughly 28 km away by road.
- Ahmedabad remains the main railhead for long-distance travellers.
- A 134 km semi high speed line from Ahmedabad to Dholera was approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2026.
- A separate freight line from Bhimnath to Dholera has been sanctioned to serve industry.
Where Is the Nearest Railway Station to Dholera?

The nearest railway station to Dholera is Dhandhuka (station code DCK). It sits on the Ahmedabad–Botad line, which was converted from metre gauge to broad gauge in recent years. The road distance from Dholera village is about 28 km, a drive of roughly half an hour.
Dhandhuka is small and handles only a limited number of trains. The most useful service for visitors is the daily Sabarmati–Bhavnagar Intercity (20965/20966), which links Dhandhuka with Ahmedabad’s Gandhigram station in about two hours. A few passenger trains and weekly long-distance services also stop here.
Because of this thin timetable, Dhandhuka works best for travellers coming from within Gujarat. For anyone arriving from another state, it is usually simpler to treat Ahmedabad as the Dholera nearest railway station for practical purposes.
Why Ahmedabad Is the Practical Choice
Ahmedabad is one of western India’s busiest rail hubs, with frequent trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kolkata and the south. From the city, the Ahmedabad Dholera Expressway offers a direct road route to Dholera. The 109 km expressway opened on 31 March 2026 and has cut road travel time sharply compared with the older state highway.
The Ahmedabad–Dholera Semi High Speed Rail

The most important rail development for the region is the Ahmedabad Dholera semi high speed rail. On 13 May 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)–Dholera semi high-speed double line. It is the first semi high-speed project of Indian Railways to be built with indigenously developed technology.
Key Facts
- Length: about 134 km of double line
- Estimated cost: about ₹20,667 crore
- Operating speed: around 200 km/h, with officials citing a design capability of 220 km/h on broad gauge
- Travel time: about 48 minutes from Sarkhej to Dholera, according to the Ministry of Railways
- Stations: 13 planned along the route
- Structure: around 74 km elevated, including three major bridges
- Spur lines: to the Dholera Airport terminal and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex
- Target completion: 2030–31
How the Route Works
The line starts at Sarkhej on Ahmedabad’s south-western edge and runs largely parallel to the expressway, using a corridor that was set aside during planning. Using reserved land reduces the risk of acquisition delays, which often hold up rail projects in India.
Beyond its main terminus, the network branches to the airport and to Lothal, so passengers will have more than one stop in and around the SIR. In practice, this means the first Dholera railway station is likely to be part of a small cluster of stations rather than a single terminal.
Where the Project Stands
Western Railway floated an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) tender worth about ₹18,901.68 crore in August 2026, with a construction period of 42 months from award. Pre-bid meetings were held in September 2026. The next milestone to watch is the award of the main contract.
The Bhimnath–Dholera Rail Line

The second project is smaller and mainly aimed at freight. The Bhimnath Dholera rail line is a new broad-gauge link of about 23 km from Bhimnath, on the Ahmedabad–Botad line, to a planned logistics hub at Dholera.
The central government sanctioned about ₹466 crore for the line in July 2024, and Western Railway invited bids for civil works soon after. The official Dholera SIR authority describes the line as under implementation. Its purpose is to connect Dholera’s industrial zones with the national rail network and, through it, the Dedicated Freight Corridor.
This line is unlikely to matter much for passengers. Its value lies in giving manufacturers in Dholera SIR a cheaper way to move raw materials and finished goods.
How Rail Fits Into Dholera’s Wider Connectivity
Rail is one of several transport links taking shape around Dholera:
- Road: the expressway is already open and is currently the fastest way in.
- Air: Dholera International Airport was reported to be about 80% complete in July 2026, with operations targeted for late 2026. See the latest Dholera airport status for updates.
- Metro: the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 3 route is planned to end at Badrabad, near the expressway, with a future extension towards Dholera under discussion.
- Port: the proposed Bhavnagar port could add a maritime dimension to the region’s freight network.
Taken together, these projects show why the Dholera rail project is significant. It adds a fast, high-capacity link that the road network alone cannot provide.
A Brief Timeline
The Dholera rail project has unfolded over more than a decade. A survey for a Dholera–Bhimnath line was reported to Parliament in 2014. Funding for that line was sanctioned in July 2024. The expressway opened in March 2026, followed by Cabinet approval of the semi high speed line in May 2026 and the EPC tender in August 2026. If construction stays on schedule, passenger trains could reach Dholera by 2030–31.
